Conception and development of an interactive web tool for the computer-based planning of waste disposal sites in Berlin
2019 – 2020

In the holistic view of new residential building projects, the planning and integration of urban waste management is a basic requirement for a functioning building concept. In order to be able to communicate the requirements and rules for a adequate container location with the building owners and planners, Berliner Stadtreinigungsbetriebe (BSR) has made this planning information available as a PDF checklist on their website. Specific inquiries as well as general advice on how to optimally integrate the stand into the building concept have currently been largely processed by telephone from the BSR. Since this work is very time-consuming, personnel-intensive and, due to the increasing construction activities, additional activity can be expected, BSR has commissioned the development of an interactive waste configurator.

Interview in the branch magazine of the BSR about the development of the interactive planning tool.

In close cooperation with the BSR, we have transferred the planning parameters for a good waste location into an interactive tool. The aim was to use the browser-based configurator to inform planner early in the concept phase about the requirements and necessities of waste space and access routes for waste containers. The spatial configuration of the container combinations result from the previous needs analysis and are shown to the users in 3D immediately after being entered. After entering the quantity requirements and comparing the requirements, planners can examine the algorithmically determined location in a 3D visualization. The interactive stand planner determines the best possible variant from hundreds of different layout options. The proposal is then made available to the planners as a download or email in a CAD-compatible PDF.
